High-Performance Artificial Sports Turf for New Zealand Fields

The best sporting moments don’t happen on a surface that’s given up. They happen on a field that’s ready, consistent underfoot, true in every condition, and built to take whatever the season throws at it.

For clubs and schools, that means no more cancelled training sessions when winter hits, no more patching up torn turf between fixtures, and no more watching a well-maintained surface deteriorate under the pressure of regular use. For homeowners, it means a tennis court that’s actually playable year-round, a half-court that holds up to daily use, or a backyard golf green that looks like it belongs there.

Whatever the project, our artificial sports turf is built around one idea: that the surface should never be the reason you can’t play. High traction, reliable drainage, consistent ball roll, and the durability to handle everything from high-impact sport to everyday backyard use — all year round, in any New Zealand conditions.

Whatever your sport, we have the perfect surface

Common Questions

What maintenance is required on artificial grass?

There are a few things you need to do to maintain your artificial lawn, depending on what you use your lawn for.

They are:

  1. Removing leaves and debris regularly with a broom or leaf blower/vac
  2. Remove the occasional weed that may appear
  3. Use a moss & sanitiser spray yearly in shaded areas
  4. You can learn more about maintenance and book a professional maintenance service here.

Can sports turf be laid indoors?

Yes! Artificial grass is just like carpet, and can be laid indoors.  Most of our products have a D or E class fire rating, meaning that they can usually be used indoors.

Who will install the sports turf for me?

Our local SmartGrass franchisee will usually be the one to install your lawn. They are professional turf installers (it’s all they do).

How long does artificial sports turf last?

The lifetime of SmartGrass sports turf depends on how much use it gets and what it is used for. Some community and club fields are used for 60+ hours each week, some private courts are only used once a month. We expect most sports turf to last 10-15 years although we have seen some still functioning great after 20 years.
We will advise you of the estimated lifetime for your particular turf and intended use when you get in touch.

What is artificial sports turf installed on?

Different projects will have different needs but most sports fields are installed on a compacted aggregate sub-base which is free-draining. Indoor sports turf and cricket wickets can be installed directly to concrete. Some sports fields may be installed to an asphalt or concrete base as well.

Do we need a shockpad underlay beneath our artificial sports surface?

Most full sized sports fields are installed over an underlay to protect players from injury and absorb shock. A shockpad should especially be considered for school and professional grade applications to meet Head Injury Criteria (HIC).

Shockpads come in different thicknesses, from 10mm to 35mm+. We’ll let you know whether shockpad is appropriate for your project and what thickness is most suitable.

Our club / school / community is interested in putting in a synthetic sports field. Where do we start?

Get in touch with us and we will send an information pack that outlines approximate costs, ways to fund your project and details for options that you may need to consider for the facility (e.g. grandstands, lighting).
